APD Makes Donation to Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation
AVON — Chief Jeffrey Bukunt is pleased to announce that the Avon Police Department recently made a donation to the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism.
The Avon Police Patrolmen’s Association sponsored an Autism Awareness patch campaign during the month of April as part of Autism Awareness Month. This was the first time the department participated in the patch campaign, and had set a goal to donate $2,000. Due to the tremendous support of the community they were able to raise and donate $2,143 to the Flutie Foundation.
On Friday, June 11, Officers Owen Carrel and Sheri Carney were invited to present a check at a Law Enforcement & Autism Collaboration Session at the Conte Forum at Boston College. The gathering was sponsored by the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation and served as an information-sharing event to bring together law enforcement officers and agencies to share their experiences in serving the autism community.
The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism provides services to people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families to assist with education, employment, activities and more, all in honor of Flutie’s son, Doug Flutie, Jr.
“On behalf of the entire Avon Police Department, I would like to thank everyone who donated to this very important campaign,” Chief Bukunt said. “We were thrilled to surpass our goal and make this donation to the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation to assist them in the vital work they do. Although April is over and the patch campaign has ended, Autism awareness and acceptance is constantly at the forefront of our minds. We will continue to recognize the importance of training to better assist those in our community with ASD.”
