AVON — Chief Robert Spurr reports that the Avon Fire Department, with assistance from its mutual aid partners, knocked down a two-alarm fire Monday night.

A call came in at 8:30 p.m. for a fire at a three-family home at 37 Page St. By the time crews arrived, all five residents had escaped. Firefighters observed smoke coming from the third floor and encountered heavy fire when they reached the second floor.

The fire was knocked down by 10 p.m.

Heat and humidity led to crews frequently rotating in and out. Avon firefighters received mutual aid from the Stoughton, Holbrook, Randolph, Brockton, Canton, Abington, and West Bridgewater fire departments. Easton crews covered Avon stations. The Avon Police Department was also on scene.

“Our crews and those from our mutual aid partners faced extremely challenging conditions,” Chief Spurr said. “We moved firefighters in and out to make sure they weren’t overwhelmed by the conditions.”

Chief Spurr said the residents on the second and third floors were sleeping when the fire broke out. They were awakened by smoke detectors and were able to escape.

“This is a good reminder for everyone to regularly test their smoke detectors,” Chief Spurr said. “Smoke detectors definitely saved lives tonight.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in more than 50 percent of home fires that were reported to fire departments in the U.S. between 2014-18, residents were alerted to the danger by a working smoke alarm. Chief Spurr encourages residents to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year to make sure they are operational.

The fire remains under investigation by the Avon Fire Department and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.
