Chief Robert Spurr reports that the Avon Fire Department extinguished a house fire earlier today on Feeley Street.

Avon Fire received a call at approximately 11 a.m. The caller reported hearing the sound of an explosion at 29 Feeley St.

Avon’s Car 1, Engine 1 and Tower 1 responded to the single-family home. Upon arrival, firefighters found heaving smoke showing from the home with heavy fire conditions coming from the back side of the home.

Fire crews mounted an aggressive exterior fire attack to darken down the heavy fire, then went inside to complete extinguishing the fire.

Firefighters were able to successfully extinguish the flames and had the fire under control by approximately noon. Crews remained on the scene overhauling until approximately 1:30 p.m.

Mutual aid was provided at the scene by the Holbrook, Stoughton and Randolph Fire Departments. The Brockton Fire Department provided station coverage.

No one was injured in the fire. The homeowner and their dog were outside of the home upon firefighters’ arrival.

The home sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage. The three residents of the home are temporarily displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, family and friends.

The fire remains under investigation by the Avon Fire Department and the State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office but is believed to be unintentional. The sound the caller heard may have been a gas can, aerosol cans or tires exploding from the heat of the fire.

“Unfortunately, there was no evidence of working smoking alarms in the home,” Chief Spurr said. “While the individual was able to safely escape the house, it is imperative that all homes have properly working smoke alarms to avoid property damage and/or serious injury.”
