AVON — Acting Town Administrator James Purcell is pleased to announce that Matthew McAndrew has been selected as the new director for the Town of Avon’s Parks and Recreation Department.
McAndrew began his role as Park and Recreation Director on March 20.
As Avon’s Park and Recreation Director, he will oversee the department’s diverse range of programming, including youth and adult fitness, sports and other activities.
His top priority will be working with the Park and Recreation Commission to get the Summer Program started. He will also assist with overseeing the town’s parks, fields and playground while supporting the commission’s work toward its goals of installing basketball courts and rehabilitating the Bartlett Street tennis courts into a combination of tennis and pickleball courts.
“We would like to welcome Matthew to the Town of Avon and the Parks and Recreation Department,” Town Administrator Purcell said. “His experience with youth through teaching, coaching and athletics administration will help him make an immediate, positive impact on our community.”
Before joining the Town of Avon, McAndrew has most recently worked in education, teaching health and physical education at two schools in Arlington, Virginia, from 2020-2022. In addition to his work in Avon, McAndrew currently serves as a physical education teacher at City on a Hill Charter Public School in Roxbury.
McAndrew also serves as a field hockey and wrestling coach, and serves as City on a Hill’s Athletic Director.
