Town Seeks Local Purple Heart Recipients to Participate in Aug. 5 Ceremony

AVON — The Town of Avon and the Avon Board of Selectmen are encouraging local Purple Heart recipients to contact the town ahead of Purple Heart Day.

Avon residents who are Purple Heart recipients are encouraged to contact Veterans Services Officer Dale Kurtz at 508-613-1315 or Town Administrator Gregory Enos at 508-588-0414 ext. 1020 by Aug. 2.

The town will once again be honoring local Purple Heart recipients as they recognize the town’s designation as a Purple Heart Community. Purple Heart Day will be recognized locally with a ceremony on Friday, Aug. 5 at Avon Town Hall and will be attended by local and state representatives as well as Purple Heart recipients. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

Nationally, Purple Heart Day is to be recognized Sunday, Aug.7.

The Purple Heart medal is presented to U.S. military service members who have been wounded or killed by enemy fire. It was originally awarded by George Washington in 1782 to recognize meritorious service in combat. It is the nation’s oldest and one of the most distinguished military awards. The community designation is given by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, an organization for combat-wounded veterans that works on legislative initiatives and provides services for veterans and their families.

The Town of Avon was declared a Purple Heart Community in 2020.
