AVON — Police Chief Jeffrey J. Bukunt is pleased to announce that a local family received a donation this week from the non-profit organization Cops for Kids with Cancer during a meet-and-greet at the Avon Police Department.

On Monday, June 27, Massachusetts State Police Lt. Colonel Tom Grenham (Ret.) and fellow Cops for Kids with Cancer Board Member Mary Coulter-Bennett presented a $5,000 check to the Chapelle family. The donation was recently applied for through Cops for Kids with Cancer to be given to the family to cover expenses relating to 3-year-old Mason Chapelle, who is currently battling Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid cancer and is undergoing additional treatment for a brain tumor.

Mason’s father, Matthew Chapelle, accepted the check with Mason. Chief Bukunt and other Avon Police officers were on hand for the presentation and met with the family as part of the event.

In addition, the Avon Police Relief Association presented Mason with a new bicycle and helmet.

“Mason is a courageous young man and is our hero,” Chief Bukunt said following the event. “At one point Mason was hospitalized for more than eight months, following a surgery. All of us at the Avon Police Department have tremendous admiration for Mason and wish him the very best in his recovery.”

Avon Police wish to thank the leadership, board members and sponsors of the Cops for Kids with Cancer organization.

“They are great partners to law enforcement and work tirelessly day-in and day-out to make a positive impact on behalf of cancer patients and their families,” Chief Bukunt added. “I encourage members of the Avon community to visit the Cops for Kids with Cancer website and consider making a donation.”
