AVON — The Avon Board of Selectmen and the Avon Fire Department are pleased to announce the retirement of longtime Avon Fire Department Captain Kevin J. Foster.
Captain Foster was a member of the Avon Fire Department for more than 45 years. He began his career on July 11, 1977 as a call firefighter. He became a fulltime firefighter in 1995 and was promoted to Captain in 1999.
During his tenure with the department, Captain Foster has been committed to the maintenance of the town’s municipal fire alarm system and has overseen the quality assurance and maintenance of the department’s vehicles. He has also served as a Special Police Officer, and as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and Public Safety Building Committee.
“Captain Foster has served for decades with the Avon Fire Department, but more than that he has been a vital member of the community,” Board of Selectmen chair Steven Rose said. “He has served in many different capacities, and has always put the residents of this town first. The Town wishes him the best in his well-deserved retirement.”
Captain Foster was honored at the Feb. 17 Board of Selectmen’s meeting. As part of the meeting, selectman Jason Suzor presented Captain Foster with a proclamation on behalf of the Board of Selectmen expressing the Board’s gratitude for his service, declaring Saturday, Feb. 19 as Captain Kevin J. Foster Day in the Town of Avon.
Senator Walter Timilty issued Captain Foster with a citation on behalf of the Massachusetts Senate, and Senator Michael Brady issued a citation on behalf of Representative William Galvin and the House of Representatives.
Chief Spurr also presented Captain Foster with a refurbished fire alarm system as a commemorative gift.
“On behalf of the entire Avon Fire Department, we thank Captain Foster for his many years of dedicated service to the department and the Town of Avon,” Fire Chief Robert Spurr said. “His knowledge of the town and its services is unparalleled, and we are grateful for everything he has done to keep our residents safe over the past four and a half decades.”
On his last day of service on Feb. 19, Captain Foster received a trip to his home in Avon in a department fire truck, and friends and family gathered in the downtown square to wish him farewell.
