AVON — Town Administrator Gregory S. Enos and Fire Chief Robert Spurr would like to invite the community to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly-renovated William T. Wheeler Fire Station.

The ribbon cutting will take place Sunday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the station, at 150 Main St. An open house will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., giving members of the community the chance to tour the station and see the department’s vehicles up close.

There will also be live fire demonstrations, refreshments and an appearance from Sparky the Fire Dog.

The family-friendly event is free and open to the public. It is being held in conjunction with the start of National Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 3-9.

“I would like to thank our town’s Designer Selection Committee, Board of Selectmen, Town officials and members of the community for supporting this project,” Chief Spurr said. “We are very pleased with the outcome, and hope this newly-renovated station allows us to better protect and serve the members of our community for years to come.”

The approximately $5.5 million renovation project for the station broke ground in July of 2020. Project meetings were held regularly throughout the construction. Carpentry, electrical, plumbing and demolition work was undertaken throughout the remainder of 2020, and Phase II of the project began this past spring.

Substantial completion of the project occurred by Aug. 3, and was on budget throughout the entire process.

“Our first responders deserve the best conditions possible to respond to calls and keep our residents safe, and this newly-renovated facility will allow our firefighters to do just that,” Town Administrator Enos said. “Despite the ongoing pandemic we were able to complete this project in a timely manner and stay within budget, and we hope the community comes to the station on Sunday to attend the ribbon cutting and take a tour of the facility.”

The station is named in recognition of William T. Wheeler, former Chief of the Avon Fire Department.
