AVON — Town Administrator Gregory S. Enos is pleased to announce that the Town of Avon is in the process of converting the Town of Avon’s streetlights to LED.
In conjunction with National Grid, the Town is currently converting hundreds of streetlights to more cost-effective, energy-efficient LEDs. The conversion began last month and is expected to be completed by early fall, depending on weather conditions. The end result will be a potential savings of $15,000-$20,000 per year on lighting costs.
The town will also be taking advantage of a one-time incentive payment for conversion of about $30,000-$40,000, which several other South Shore communities have done recently as part of their conversion projects.
As part of the conversion, National Grid will retain ownership of the streetlights. Residents should still go to National Grid to report outages in the streetlights.
“There are many benefits to LED streetlights. They last longer than traditional bulbs, provide brighter light to provide a safer area of travel for vehicles and pedestrians, are much more economical than traditional lights, and will help modernize the Town of Avon’s roadways,” said Avon Board of Selectmen member Jason Suzor. “Many cities and towns are upgrading to LEDs, along with private sector commerce parks and lots, and it is exciting to be able to be joining them here in town.”
According to National Grid, as of Friday, Sept. 17, approximately 10 percent of the conversion project has been completed thus far.
