AVON — Chief Jeffrey Bukunt reports that the Avon Police Department this morning arrested a man on a warrant in connection with a shooting at an intersection in March.
TYVON THOMPSON, AGE 27, whose last known address was in BROCKTON, was arrested and charged with:
- Assault with Intent to Murder
- Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
- Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury
- Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
- Discharge of a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on March 23, Avon Police received reports of a shooting that had occurred at the intersection of West Main Street and Harrison Boulevard.
A suspect in a vehicle, later determined to be THOMPSON, had allegedly shot into another vehicle stopped at a traffic light. The other vehicle was occupied by two men, one of whom suffered gunshot wounds. The victim, a 27-year-old man of Boston, suffered two gunshot wounds to the abdomen. The victim was subsequently transported to an area hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.
The shooting was not believed to be random.
Through the subsequent investigation, Avon Police developed probable cause that THOMPSON was the man who allegedly shot the victim.
At approximately 6:40 a.m. today, members of the Avon Police Department, U.S. Marshalls Task Force, Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and Weymouth Police arrested THOMPSON at a residence on Avalon Drive in Weymouth on a warrant issued by Stoughton District Court.
THOMPSON was taken into custody without incident and was arraigned Friday in Stoughton District Court and is being held pending a dangerousness hearing.
“Although this incident is not believed to be random, the alleged acts resulted in a serious risk to the public and other motorists,” Chief Bukunt said. “I would like to thank the officers and investigators of the Avon Police Department and our partners at the Brockton Police Department for their hard work on this investigation, which resulted in an arrest being made.”
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
