AVON — Town Administrator Gregory S. Enos and Health Agent Kathleen Waldron would like to invite residents to the annual household hazardous waste collection day.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at Randolph High School, 70 Memorial Parkway, Randolph. It is available for residents of both the Towns of Avon and Randolph.

At no charge, residents may drop off up to 10 gallons of hazardous wastes such as oil-based paint, thinner, linseed oil, adhesives, used motor oil, antifreeze, cleaning chemicals, pool chemicals, batteries, pesticides and fertilizers.

On the day of the event, Avon and Randolph residents must have a form of identification, such as a driver’s license or a utility bill, to register on site that day. Residents will be asked to remain in their vehicle at all times. As you approach the unloading zone, you will be instructed to open your trunk so that your registration process can be competed.

A trained technician wearing a face covering and protective clothing will then unload your vehicle. It is recommended that the unwanted materials are brought to the event in original containers. If there are multiple small items, (such as aerosol cans, or quart size paint cans,) then you may pack the items in a cardboard box or similar container for the technicians to take. The box will not be returned.

A Clean Venture Inc., (ACV) is a professional contractor who has been hired for this even to collect, manage, transport, dispose or recycle the materials that are dropped off. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enforces state regulations (MGL 310 CMR 30.00 Hazardous Waste) for the management of hazardous waste to protect human health and the environment.

In addition to the items mentioned above, residents can drop off tires (car tires are $8 each and truck tires are $12 each), unwanted medication and documents for on-site shredding.

Items that will not be collected include latex paint, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers, flairs, sharps, needles, thermometers, and propane tanks. Latex paint can be dried and disposed of in your municipal curbside collection program.

There is no rain date for this event.

For additional information, contact Agent Waldron at 508-588-0414 ext. 1016 or kwaldron@avon-ma.gov. This event is brought to Avon residents by the Avon and Randolph Boards of Health and the Town of Avon.
