AVON — Vice Chair Dan Hart and Town Administrator Gregory S. Enos regretfully announce the passing of Avon Parks & Recreation Chair Carl S. Fischer on Sunday, Aug. 9, after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 59.
Fischer joined the Avon Parks & Recreation Commission in 2015 and served as chair of the Commission since 2017. His passion for baseball had him leading the charge for focused improvements of the fields around town. He was also a former Avon School Committee member, and past member of the Public Safety Building Committee.
Mr. Fischer was employed as a Dispatch Supervisor for Stoughton Public Safety since 2017, and had served as a dispatcher for the Town of Avon for 25 years prior.
A native of Avon, he was a graduate and president of the Avon High School Class of 1978, and was proud that his son Bryan was the president of the Avon High School Class of 2020.
“Carl continued to find ways to serve the families in this town he loved with his support in developing year-round programming for teens. Most recently under his guidance the Torie Tot lot was added to the Butler School playground, where his two sons Joe and Bryan volunteered on build day,” Vice Chair Hart said. “Even after his diagnosis Carl continued to attend and preside over Commission meetings. He had so much he wanted to accomplish, and his absence will be felt by all involved in the department and all around Avon, where he left a lasting mark in the many ways he served. He loved this town, took great pride in the Avon community, and it is our hope we can carry forth with his vision and make him proud.”
In Fischer’s honor, a purple ribbon campaign (for pancreatic cancer awareness) has been ongoing in Avon since March. The front of the Stoughton Police Department is adorned with purple ribbons as well.
His family owned Fischer’s Market just over the Brockton line for 40 years.
Fischer was known for his dedicated love of family and caring for others. He was the beloved husband of Lori J. (Matta) Fischer for almost 27 years. The couple had two sons, Joseph and Bryan Fischer. He enjoyed watching his boys’ sports games while being a baseball coach and vice president of Avon Little League.
“Carl will be missed by all who knew him,” Avon Police Chief Jeffrey J. Bukunt said. “His passion for helping others made him a highly skilled and dedicated dispatcher for many years in Avon, and later in Stoughton, and his service to these communities was second to none.”

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St., Brockton. COVID-19 protocols, including face masks and exiting after paying respects, will be in place. Funeral and burial services will be private.
