AVON — Town Administrator Gregory S. Enos and the Avon Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners announces that its 2020 summer program has been suspended until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was made as the Commissioners feel it would be very difficult to allow children to take part in many of the traditional summer program activities while following the required public health guidelines and protocols.

“The summer program is a place where children can have fun with their friends and have freedom to be creative and play, so we understand that this is sad news for all of the children and families who look forward to the program,” Recreation Director Jennifer Mayo said. “However, we felt that suspending this year’s summer program was the necessary decision to make to keep our children, staff and community safe as the COVID-19 situation is still fluid. Though we won’t be able to see everyone’s faces at the program this summer, we hope to be able to see everyone out and about in the community.”

The board hopes to be able to organize separate events later in the summer as COVID-19 restrictions lessen. These plans will be shared with the community if and when they become available.

“Unfortunately, the Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners has had to make the tough decision to suspend the 2020 summer program indefinitely,” Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners Vice Chairman Dan Hart said. “Given the current circumstances, we believe that it is the best course of action for the health and safety of the nearly 200 kids and numerous staff members who are part of the program.”

Questions or concerns can be directed to the Park and Recreation office at 508-588-0414 ext. 1055 or to Director Mayo at jmayo@avon-ma.gov.
